Do Probe have an in-house design capability?

Probe have a dedicated in-house design team with many years of combined experience. The team use the latest industry design software and work closely with our clients and manufacturing partners to ensure designs meet with both their needs, while delivering the work to the appropriate industry standards.

Are there any design challenges that Probe would not be able to take on?

A big challenge in design is making something which is manufacturable, and at the same time fits our customers’ requirements. Along with our 40+ years of experience our in-house design team can draw from a library of drawings which also go back four decades to reference back to and help drive a qualified solution. We are also proud to be part of the Acteon group of companies, a group committed to working together for the benefit of its clients. With best-in-class expertise, if a requirement is outside our area of understanding we can draw on the expertise of our sister companies where required from across the globe to extend capability.

Do your products meet industry safety codes and standards?

Good Probe design and manufacturing processes are essential to ensure we meet technical and legal requirements. By definition, good design will also lead to safe design and this is something we pride ourselves on. While meeting our legal obligations is the minimum required, Probe always go that bit further and take best practice on board throughout the design process. Some of our design work will be sent to third party accreditors and verification organisations to seek approval against standards. If customers’ requests do not meet the standards required, we will advise on the most suitable course of action to meet those requirements.

What is your procurement challenge?

I would like to reduce costs and achieve savings for my project

Like all well respected manufacturing companies Probe’s key priority in achieving strategic cost reductions is targeting resources where they can earn the best return, rather than just cutting costs. We find the correct approach to each job, to guarantee the most productive route though our machine shop. While the answer may differ by project, as an organisation we also pride ourselves with continuous Improvement. In a nutshell, it’s finding ways to reduce product costs through any means possible which in turn importantly saves money for our clients.

I am looking to find a supplier who can provide a holistic approach to a project?

At Probe we focus on the 'entire' manufacturing process, bringing together both technology and human systems to identify and reduce production variability. Throughout any given project it’s increasingly important that our staff are trained to have a complete view of the processes and the various technologies involved for each project, from the beginning to the end. This holistic philosophy has provided results that means guaranteed process improvements for our organisation that yields substantial cost savings for our clients.

I would like to find a supplier that can consistently deliver a quality product?

Competitive quality, cost, service, and delivery have always been key requirements for our customers. It is a fundamental premise of Probe’s manufacturing strategy that high-quality end products cannot be built cost effectively from low-quality components.

We have invested in a considerable stock of quality raw material which is held exclusively for the use of Probe Oil Tools Ltd. We stock AISI 4130 alloy steel, heat treated and tested to exceed the requirements of API-6A, with minimum 75k yield and extra impact tests to qualify it for the most severe services. Our stock of round bar ranges from 70mm to 1,200mm diameter suitable to manufacture the largest API-6A Flange in current use, and square bar from 9″ to 18″ square, covering most of the size requirements for API studded blocks. The stock held is generally more than 1000 tonnes and we can therefore meet urgent delivery times from this holding.

Because of the purchasing power created by such large stocks, we can also take advantage of favourable delivery times from our suppliers for other grades of steel that we do not stock. All our material is also fully traceable, with certificates issued by the original steel mill together with heat treatment and mechanical testing reports.

Our stocks are also all subject to receiving full inspections and we have state of the art in-house facilities to perform a variety of non-destructive testing including ultrasonic examination, magnetic particle inspection, liquid penetrant inspection and Brinell hardness testing.

Following our recent move to our new all purpose-built facilities we have also made a significant investment in machine capacity by purchasing some of the latest C.N.C. machine tools in the world, as well as conventional machines, to manufacture quality equipment in the shortest possible time. This adds to our existing machine portfolio and full range of inspection equipment and tools. Our plant capability enables us to machine items from the smallest to the largest equipment in use in the drilling and production industry today.

This full-service offering has enabled us to drive consistency in both what Probe offers and how we deliver it. And due to this our customers have been extremely loyal as they have confidence in our products and services.

How do you identify risks and determine the risk mitigation of projects?

For senior responsible owners and buyers it is important to engage with the marketplace in terms of identifying the desired outcomes, risks and issues of any project requirement. As part of project scope Probe will provide feedback on how the outcomes to a requirement might be achieved, the risks and issues as we see them, along with feedback on timescales, feasibility and affordability. Effective management of risk helps Probe manage innovation and improve performance by contributing to increased certainty and fewer surprises for our clients along the way.

What is your QA challenge?

What health and safety procedures do Probe have in place?

Probe are utterly committed to undertaking our business in such a way as to minimise the risks of injury or ill-health to our people and damage to property. As part of our commitment to safety excellence, we have attained OHSAS 18001 certification as part of the company’s overall IMS.

What quality assurance systems are in place to catch product defects before they get into the final production?

Our philosophy of responsive, practical service is at the heart of our approach to quality management. This is evident in the form of fast response and clear communication of clients’ objectives and requirements and complemented by products of appropriate high quality, reliability, safety and cost effectiveness.

We have also implemented a formal Integrated Management System (IMS), and have gained certification to ISO 9001 – 2015

Our dedicated in-house quality team help us continue to raise the quality bar as the business grows – they keep our plant and equipment certified, and just as importantly, communicate quality issues across the entire business.

What quality control checks take place at critical control points in a Probe product's manufacturing cycle?

Controlling quality by utilizing product inspections throughout the production cycle reduces sourcing risks and cost. Inspections can be conducted at any point throughout the production process. At Probe we carry out ‘First Off’ inspection procedures and ‘In Process’ quality control. With ‘First Off’ inspection soon after production begins (typically between once 1% and 10% of the batch has been produced) we inspect for quality of the components according to agreed specifications. Our ‘In Process’ quality control also includes all the aspects of a regular quality inspection: product appearance, quality, size & measurements, weight check, and any other necessary tests and special requirements depending on the product. We also schedule third party witness testing and verification checks if our clients request it and provide 100%-dimensional inspection reports.

How do Probe demonstrate their commitment to the environment & comply with legislation

Within the Probe management system, we have incorporated the requirements of ISO 14001 and gained full certification. We believe our current business activities, and status of business development, constitute a limited environmental impact.

Nevertheless, in all aspects of our business, we are committed to protecting the environment from avoidable harm.

How are materials tested to make sure they are being developed to meet specified requirements and standards?

Probe’s product testing has multiple applications, from determining if the specifications are being met to troubleshoot various issues that may arise. Using applicable industry related standards to measure the product’s properties and evaluate performance provides assurance of quality throughout the production process. For Probe this provides a proactive strategy, and can avoid costly delays and rework down the line.

Probe Oil Tools Ltd. is licensed by the American Petroleum Institute to manufacture and monogram products conforming to API Specification 6A (6A-1840). We also hold the prestigious API Q1 Certificate of Registration (Q1-3046) to verify that our quality system has been audited by the American Petroleum Institute, and is in accordance with this rigorous Quality Standard.

Our Quality Management System is also registered with DNVGL to BS-EN-ISO 9001:2015, ISO-14001, OHSAS-18001 (Certificate No. 106751-2011-AQ-GBR-UKAS).

We are registered with Bureau Veritas (Notified Body No.0041) with a Certificate of Quality System Approval No. CE-0041-PED-H-POT-16GBR for Module “H” of the European Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU

In addition to these quality standards we are registered with Achilles/FPAL (Supplier No. 10055321)

API-6A is the worldwide accepted standard for the manufacture and production of Wellhead and Christmas Tree Equipment. It contains dimensions and specifications including testing requirements so that dimensionally interchangeable equipment can be purchased anywhere in the world. Our API 6A and Q1 Licenses add the assurance that equipment manufactured by Probe Oil Tools Ltd. meets all the requirements of these internationally accepted standards and is fully in compliance with them.

To receive all of these licenses and registrations has meant that our quality systems, manufacturing processes and management methods have all been accepted on a regular basis by different certifying authorities and notified bodies after intensive audit processes.
